The list of things about which I want to learn more
The impetus behind my starting this blog and initiating my year-long
Journey toward getting hired with This American Life (or just getting my stuff aired on the show) was to corral my creative energies into one massive herd of artistic energy. I’m usually a very scattered person, and I find that when I don’t set specific goals with deadlines, I get distracted quickly.

Some narration from my First Attempt
I know I’ve been a little MIA, but things are pretty nuts for me right now. My boss at work went to Uganda for a month (for a unique cultural experience, check out her blog that I created, wrote and updated), and I’m in the throes of writing something fairly epic for an upcoming solo performance show.
Still, that’s no excuse.

Recording phone conversations OR: I was going to write something until someone else did it way better
For the past two weeks, I’ve been pulling together lots of research on recording phone conversations.
Being able to record via the phone will be a huge benefit as I step into The Gathering (Step Six) of my First Attempt: I have an aunt living much too far away to interview in person.
I had written a draft of the post covering this information, then I stumbled upon this article at Transom.
Well. They pretty much went and wrote the bible on recording phone conversations, so I’m going to stop putting effort into that endeavor, take their research and advice and move on with my life.
Thanks, Transom!

Transom: a valuable tool for would-be radio producers
I’m trying to listen to everything I can. I’m also trying to read everything that might help me in my Journey. I’ve found Transom to be an incredible resource.

Snow memories: seizing the moment and recording ambient sound
I’m playing around with taking my recorder more places and catching interesting sounds. I’m trying to train myself into hearing interesting stories everywhere.

Playing with recording and editing: Hard Times Come Again No More
Since I’m a touch ahead schedule for my First Attempt, I thought I’d play around a bit with recording, editing and layering.

The Tascam DR-07 and my first experiment
The first recording device I ever owned was a Talkboy as seen in Home Alone 2. I never used it to fake out British-sounding, smarmy concierges, but I recorded anything I could imagine with it. Somewhere there are tapes of my Pakistani neighbor and I singing patriotic American songs. I only know they exist because I’ve not yet had the chance to destroy them.
