If This American Life seeks to reveal true human stories in radio form, Anna Deavere Smith seeks to tell true human stories as they explode with passion on stage. Ms. Smith doesn’t need to go to Washington to prove that she means business.

A friend and collaborator, my whetstone
Though I’ve been a storyteller most of my life, I didn’t get my first real sharpening until I moved to Chicago and took a solo performance class directed by Stephanie Shaw. Stephanie was a superb teacher, and I learned a great deal and evolved hugely under her care and tutelage.
During this solo performance class, I met one Claire Cooney (she writes as CSE Cooney). Claire is my whetstone: she is the rock against which I sharpen my blade.
