Snow memories: seizing the moment and recording ambient sound
I’m playing around with taking my recorder more places and catching interesting sounds. I’m trying to train myself into hearing interesting stories everywhere.

Radiolab transcends reality
While This American Life is the radio show for which I have a deep desire to produce, Radiolab is another public radio program I admire quite a lot. The hosts Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich treat words and sounds like the most potent of artists’ tools. A gurgling sound in a piece about the chemistry of procreation becomes a deep layer of color and texture in the broader story. They experiment with different ways of presenting sounds, and they use silence the way a sculptor shapes stone: with a deft and deliberate hand. Their audio pieces create layers of meaning and texture that remove me from the mundane environment I’m in when I’m listening.
I’m frequently moved and amused by their stories, but what interests me most is the wholly unique tone and pace of their program.
